Clinical trials don’t take holidays

As we enter the holiday season, many of us can finally take a breath, look forward to time with family, indulge in small comforts, and reflect on the year behind us. And in the clinical trials industry, it’s tempting to do the same, but the work is demanding, the stakes are immense, and the pace rarely eases.

But this season always humbles me. It reminds me that while we step away to rest, millions of patients don’t get to take a holiday from their conditions. Chronic pain doesn’t pause because it’s December. Rare diseases don’t wait for the new year to relent. Parents caring for children with life-altering diagnoses don’t get a break simply because a holiday is approaching.

And clinical trials don’t stop either.

Study visits continue. Side effects continue. Questions, anxieties, and unexpected challenges continue.

In fact, for many patients, the holiday season can intensify their need for support—emotionally, logistically, and medically. Navigating a trial is hard enough. Doing so while juggling travel, family obligations, or the loneliness that this season can bring makes it even harder.

At the same time, clinical site staff are human too. They deserve time with their families, time to rest, and time to reconnect. Yet they remain responsible for patients who may need more support than usual during this period. And that tension—between dedication and personal well-being—is one of the most humbling truths about clinical research.

That’s why, at SubjectWell, we’ve invested deeply in patient and site companions: real humans who step in to support patients when they need guidance, reassurance, or logistical help; and to support sites when they need relief, continuity, and trusted partnership. Because trials can’t pause for the holidays, but burnout shouldn’t be the cost of progress.

Working in clinical trials is humbling not just because the science is complex or the timelines demanding, but because our work is tied directly to human lives. Every protocol decision, every recruitment strategy, every engagement touchpoint—these things matter to people who can’t put their diagnosis on hold while the rest of the world celebrates.

At SubjectWell, we talk often about accelerating enrollment and reducing site burden. But beneath the metrics lies a deeper truth:

We are part of someone’s fight for a future.

We are contributing to therapies that may one day allow families to celebrate the holidays without fear. We are helping patients find opportunities they didn’t know existed. We are supporting the sites who stand on the front lines of that hope.

So this season, I’m proud—and profoundly humbled—to be part of an industry built on resilience, compassion, and purpose. Proud to serve teams who show up every day knowing the challenges but still choosing hope. And proud that SubjectWell plays a role in ensuring both patients and sites have consistent, thoughtful support—even, and especially, when the rest of the world is taking a break.

To everyone in this space—sponsors, CROs, site teams, advocates, and especially patients—thank you. Your commitment is the heartbeat of progress.

As we celebrate, let’s allow ourselves a moment of gratitude. But let’s also remember the families navigating life-changing conditions right now, and the professionals supporting them.

Here’s to rest, reflection, and a renewed commitment to ensuring that every patient, everywhere, feels supported—during the holidays and every day after.
