When patients begin their clinical trial journey, the unknowns can feel overwhelming.

That’s where Adam steps in.

Not as a script reader or box checker, but as a listening ear to provide support during a person’s healthcare journey. Adam makes each call feel like a conversation with someone who’s in their corner. We sat down with Adam to learn more about what it’s really like to be a patient companion, and why it’s more than just a job for him.

Why I became a patient companion

Adam didn’t take this role lightly. “I love making a difference in the lives of patients as they seek new treatment options. Having cared for my nan, who had various conditions, from a young age, I understand how important it is to provide support and make a meaningful impact.”

For Adam, the idea of helping someone navigate a complex system, offering empathy along the way, was exactly the kind of work he wanted to do.

A day in my shoes

Adam’s day starts with prep. “I like to review the patients I’ll be speaking with that day—where they are in the process, any notes from prior calls, things like that. To balance multiple patients, it’s important for me to find out the best time to reach out to them, and whether they prefer an email before or after.” From there, it’s all about being present.

“No two calls are the same,” he says. “One person might just want to confirm a time and move on. Another might need to talk for 30 minutes because they’re nervous or confused. I’m here for both.”

The most rewarding part of the job

For Adam, it’s all about the impact, however small it might seem.

“You don’t always realize how much just listening matters, but when patients feel truly heard, that’s the best part of my day. Sometimes, they’re unable to discuss their condition with their own doctors or nurses, so providing them with the opportunity to speak and be listened to is incredibly meaningful for both them and for me.”

One thing about your role you wish more people understood

“I wish more people understood that we are here to guide and support them, not to sell anything.” Adam says. “Our focus is on helping them navigate the process with care and understanding.” He adds, “It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about creating space for their questions.”

Final thoughts

Adam brings calm, care, and clarity to every patient he supports.

“This role isn’t about speed or checklists. It’s about people. Being there for them, providing support, and helping them feel understood is what makes this work so meaningful to me.”
