Mbali Tshiamo Motsoane resides and works in Cape Town, South Africa, yet her influence extends globally. Supporting patients across Australia, Canada, the UK, South Africa, and the United States, Mbali brings a calm and thoughtful approach to guiding people through clinical trials.

Fluent in English, Setswana, and isiZulu, she ensures every patient feels informed, empowered, and respected. We spoke with Mbali about her work as a patient companion and how she helps transform uncertainty into understanding.

Why I became a patient companion

Mbali was drawn to this role by a desire to make a real difference. “I enjoy making a difference in people’s lives by helping them access innovative treatments,” she shares.

Knowing that she’s contributing to both clinical research and patient care is what motivates her every day. “This work directly impacts people’s health and well-being,” she says. “And that matters deeply to me.”

A day in my shoes

Every day, Mbali helps patients understand what clinical trials involve. “A typical conversation involves introducing the process, explaining eligibility criteria in simple terms, addressing concerns, and making sure they understand what participation entails.”

But for Mbali, it’s about trust and care as much as it is logistics. “It’s a balance between providing clear information and making patients feel comfortable and supported throughout their journey.”

The most rewarding part of the job

“The most rewarding part of my day is when a patient expresses gratitude for helping them navigate the trial process.”

For example, she recently worked with a patient who had been struggling to find treatment options. “They were relieved and hopeful after learning they pre-qualified for a trial that could improve their condition.”

That sense of hope when someone sees a path forward is what keeps her going.

A conversation she’ll never forget

Mbali once supported a patient who was deeply hesitant about clinical trials due to past misinformation. “Through our conversation, I helped them understand the process, addressed their concerns, and showed the value of a trial that could give them access to a potential new treatment.”

Watching their confidence grow and knowing she played a role in their journey was an unforgettable moment. “It was incredibly fulfilling.”

One thing about your role you wish more people understood

Mbali wants people to know that clinical trials aren’t a last resort. “They’re an opportunity to access cutting-edge treatments,” she says.

And patient support is crucial:

“We make the process less intimidating by ensuring people are well-informed, comfortable, and empowered in their decision-making.”

Final thoughts

Mbali’s approach is rooted in empathy, clarity, and cultural awareness. She meets each patient where they are, whether that means simplifying clinical language or just listening without judgment. Every call is an opportunity to offer not only information, but dignity and hope.
